Brand Guidelines

Broadnarrow LLP — Brand Guidelines: Masters

Document type: canonical specification · Governs: the .ai master artwork only Does not govern: exports, spacing in application, or any deliverable file — see BN-BRAND-EXPORTS.

How to use this document. Section 0 summarises the whole document. Section 1 maps common questions to the section that answers them. Section 2 lists every numeric constant in machine-readable form. Sections 3 onward are the full specification. Rules carry stable IDs (e.g. MU-03) so they can be cited and amended precisely.

0. Summary

The essentials of the Broadnarrow master artwork system:

  1. Two colours only — pure black #000000 and pure white #FFFFFF. No accent colours.
  2. One typeface — Oswald. “broad” in Medium, “narrow” in Light, ™/® glyphs in Regular.
  3. Three assets — the Wordmark (“broadnarrow”), the Logo (a pair of square brackets), and the Lockup (both combined). The Lockup is the preferred signature.
  4. One master unit c — the height of the outlined wordmark. Every identity ratio is expressed in c. The logo’s internal geometry uses p, linked by 0.80p = c.
  5. Twelve master files, all .ai, all in 020 Logos & Wordmarks / 010 Masters. That folder is the only source of truth.
  6. Trademark status: pending. Application filed in India only. Use the variants now; the ® variants exist but must not be used until registration is granted.
  7. Two size treatmentsSize Standard for normal use, Size Responsive (enlarged symbol) at or below c ≈ 48 px / 15 mm.
  8. Never distort. All scaling is aspect-ratio locked, without exception.
  9. Masters are tight-cropped — artwork only, no padding. The bounding box is the measurement datum.
  10. Change control is mandatory — new dated master, change-log entry, version bump.

3. Foundations

Rules in this section apply to every asset. Asset specifications in §7 add only what is specific to each mark.

3.1 Colour

The brand is strictly two-colour. There are no accent or secondary brand colours.

Token HEX RGB CMYK Reference
BN Black #000000 0 / 0 / 0 0 / 0 / 0 / 100 Pantone Process Black C
BN White #FFFFFF 255 / 255 / 255 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 Unprinted / paper
ID Rule
FND-01 Marks, type, and fine detail reproduce at 100% K (flat black).
FND-02 Large solid black fills in offset print use a rich black of C60 M40 Y40 K100 (or the printer’s house rich black) to avoid banding.
FND-03 White is achieved by knock-out or the substrate — never by printing white ink, except on dark or non-white stock.

3.2 Typography

Property Value
Primary typeface Oswald — condensed, low-contrast sans-serif
Source Google Fonts
Licence SIL Open Font License 1.1 — free for commercial use, embedding, and web use
Weight — “broad” Oswald Medium
Weight — “narrow” Oswald Light
Weight — ™ / ® glyphs Oswald Regular
Digital fallback stack Oswald, "Arial Narrow", "Helvetica Neue Condensed", sans-serif
ID Rule
FND-04 All delivery masters are outlined, so reproduction does not require Oswald to be installed.
FND-05 The fallback stack is for surrounding UI and body text only — never for reproducing a mark.
FND-06 Editing the live wordmark master requires Oswald installed.

3.3 Notation

Every construction value is a multiple of a named unit — never a bare number.

The system uses one primary unit. Symbol sizing, symbol placement, lockup scale, and lockup spacing are all expressed in c. Only the logo’s internal geometry uses p, and that is linked to c by a fixed relation.

Symbol Type Definition
c Primary unit Height of the outlined bounding box of the “broadnarrow” artwork — the H value in Illustrator’s Transform panel with the outlined wordmark selected.
p Logo unit Side of the logo’s initial construction square (guide R1). Linked to the wordmark: 0.80p = c (the right bracket’s height, per the lockup construction), hence p = 1.25c. The finished logo’s overall bounding box is not stated here — TODO: measure from BN Logo.ai.
D Position Datum — the top-right corner of the word “narrow”. Because “narrow” has no ascenders, D sits below the top of the wordmark box.
s Derived Trademark symbol height — 0.10c / 0.20c / 0.14c / 0.30c by variant.
g Derived Symbol gap — 0.10c, from D to the symbol’s left edge.
d Derived Lockup spacing — 0.25c, between logo and wordmark.

Terminology. Broadnarrow calls c the wordmark’s cap height. Strictly, “broadnarrow” is lowercase with ascenders (b, d) and no descenders, so this box height is the ascender height. The firm’s usage is retained; what matters is that c is unambiguously the height of the outlined wordmark.

3.4 Aspect ratio

ID Rule
FND-07 Brand artwork is never distorted. All scaling is performed with the aspect ratio locked. No stretching, condensing, or skewing. This rule has no exceptions.

3.5 Minimum sizes

Below these sizes legibility is not guaranteed and the mark must not be used. Unlike every other value in this document, minimum sizes are absolute rather than ratios — legibility does not scale.

Asset Measured Digital (min) Print (min)
Wordmark c 24 px 8 mm
Logo p 16 px 5 mm
Lockup overall height 32 px 10 mm
ID Rule
FND-08 Use the Size Responsive trademark variant whenever the rendered symbol height s would fall below 6 px / 1.75 mm. Since s = 0.10c at Standard, this occurs at roughly c ≤ 48 px / 15 mm. Use Size Standard above that.

3.6 Backgrounds & contrast

ID Rule
FND-09 Two colourways only: BN Black artwork on light backgrounds, BN White artwork on dark backgrounds.
FND-10 Maintain a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 between artwork and background.
FND-11 Use black on backgrounds up to ~20% grey tint; white on ~80%+ . Avoid mid-tone backgrounds, where neither colourway holds sufficient contrast.
FND-12 Over photography or gradients, place the mark on an area of even, sufficient contrast, or use a solid holding shape. Never on busy or low-contrast areas.

3.7 Master-file handling

ID Rule
FND-13 Format & location. Masters are vector Adobe Illustrator (.ai), stored in Brand & Creative / 020 Logos & Wordmarks / 010 Masters. This is the only source of truth.
FND-14 Live vs outlined. Exactly one live (editable-text) wordmark master is retained for edits; every other master is outlined.
FND-15 Tight crop. A master contains the artwork only, cropped tight to its bounding box, with no padding. The bounding box is the measurement datum (c) — padding a master would make c ambiguous and corrupt every derived ratio. Spacing is a property of application, not of the master.
FND-16 Naming. YYYY-MM-DD BN <Asset> <Variant>[ Live].ai
FND-17 Versioning. On any change, save a new dated master and record it in the change log. Never silently overwrite. Superseded masters move to the section archive. To change a master, follow the BN-BRAND-CHANGE SOP, which keeps this document in step with the artwork.
FND-18 Isolation. Never edit an export back into a master. Masters flow to exports, never the reverse.

4. Prohibitions

These apply to every asset. Asset-specific prohibitions are listed in §7.

ID Prohibition Basis
MU-01 Do not distort — no stretching, condensing, skewing, or non-proportional scaling FND-07
MU-02 Do not rotate the mark
MU-03 Do not recolour — only BN Black or BN White; no gradients, tints, or brand-foreign colours FND-09
MU-04 Do not add effects — no shadows, glows, bevels, strokes, textures, or 3D
MU-05 Do not alter construction — no changes to proportions, spacing, or element relationships §7
MU-06 Do not re-typeset or recreate the wordmark in another font or by hand FND-04
MU-07 Do not use below minimum size FND-08 / §3.5
MU-08 Do not place on insufficient contrast or busy backgrounds FND-10FND-12
MU-09 Do not crop, box, or partially obscure the mark unless an approved container is specified
MU-10 Do not animate, outline-trace, or reconstruct from an export — always start from the master FND-18
MU-11 Do not use superseded versions — always pull the current master FND-17

5. Usage

5.1 Asset hierarchy

Priority Asset Use when
1 Lockup The default, preferred brand signature. Use wherever space allows.
2 Wordmark Wide/short spaces, or where the logo would be redundant — document headers, letterhead.
3 Logo Compact or square contexts, or where the brand is already established — app icons, favicons, avatars, watermarks.
ID Rule
USE-01 Use the outlined wordmark for all reproduction and delivery. The live master is the editable source only.

5.2 Trademark symbol

Current status: trademark pending. Broadnarrow has filed an application; the mark is not yet registered.

ID Rule
USE-02 The ™ variants are the active marks. The ® variants must not be used until registration is granted.
USE-03 Use for unregistered or pending marks; use ® only once the mark is registered in the relevant jurisdiction.
USE-04 Apply the symbol on the first and/or most prominent use, and on all external / marketing materials. It may be omitted in body copy and internal documents.
USE-05 Use at most one symbol per mark instance.
USE-06 Geographic scope. The application is filed in India only. On grant, ® will be valid only in India; outside India continue using unless separately registered there.

™ → ® transition mechanism. The ® masters already exist and are held ready.

Trigger Action Owner
Registration granted Switch active marks from to ® across masters, exports, and live applications; retire ™ from active use; produce the ® exports; then log and version. Brand Lead + Records Owner

6. Master inventory

7. Asset specifications

Each specification follows the same structure: Definition → Construction → Variants → Prohibitions. Colour, minimum size, contrast, and universal prohibitions are governed by §3 and §4.

7.1 Wordmark

Definition. The typographic logotype: the single lowercase word “broadnarrow” set in Oswald, with a two-weight construction — “broad” in Oswald Medium, “narrow” in Oswald Light. Apart from this deliberate weight pairing it uses Oswald’s default metrics: no custom kerning, tracking, or letterform edits.

Live vs outlined. The live master retains editable text; the outlined master converts that text to vector paths for font-independent delivery. They are visually identical.

Trademark symbol construction. The ™ / ® glyph is set in Oswald Regular, converted to outlines, then placed by this rule — identical for every symbol variant:

Property Specification
Datum D Top-right corner of the word “narrow” — the right-top edge of the terminal “w”. Sits below the top of the wordmark box, which is set by the ascenders of “broad”.
Size Symbol height s = a fixed fraction of c (per variant), scaled aspect-locked.
Horizontal Gap g = 0.10c, measured from D rightward to the symbol’s left edge.
Vertical Symbol centred about D — mid-height level with D, extending s/2 above and below.

Variants. g and D are identical for every variant; only s changes.

Variant Symbol s Purpose
Primary — live Editable source only
Primary — outlined Default plain wordmark for delivery
™ Size Standard 0.10c ™ at normal / larger sizes
™ Size Responsive 0.20c ™ at small sizes (legibility)
® Size Standard ® 0.14c ® at normal / larger sizes
® Size Responsive ® 0.30c ® at small sizes (legibility)

® runs larger than ™ at equivalent treatments because the glyph’s enclosing circle needs more height to stay legible.

Prohibitions.

ID Prohibition
WM-01 Do not reassign the weights — “broad” stays Medium, “narrow” stays Light
WM-02 Do not substitute another typeface or Oswald weight
WM-03 Do not resize, reposition, or restyle the ™ / ® independently of the wordmark
WM-04 Do not convert the outlined wordmark back to live text for delivery

Definition. A geometric mark: a pair of square brackets — a left bracket and a smaller mirrored right bracket — grouped and reproduced as fill-only artwork.

Construction. All dimensions in the base unit p. Three guide rectangles establish anchor points and are deleted at the end.

Left bracket 1. Draw a square p × p, fill none, stroke 1 px — guide R1. 2. Draw a rectangle 0.80p high × 0.60p wide; centre it in R1 — guide R2. 3. Draw a rectangle p high × 0.45p wide; centre it in R1, then snap it to the left edge inside R1 — guide R3. 4. With the pen tool, draw a path joining the resulting anchor points to form the left bracket.

Right bracket

  1. Duplicate the left bracket; aspect-locked, scale it to 0.80p high (80% of the left bracket).
  2. Mirror it, centre it in R1, then snap it to the right edge of R1.

Finish

  1. Delete the three guide rectangles.
  2. Set stroke to none and fill with BN Black or BN White.
  3. Group the two brackets — this group is the logo.

Known dimensions. The two measurements fixed by the construction steps above:

Measure Left bracket Right bracket
Height p 0.80p (step 5)

The bracket’s detailed shape — stroke widths, arm lengths, the exact path — is defined by the pen-tool path drawn from the three guide rectangles’ anchor points (step 4), not by a separate set of ratios. There is no additional geometry to state beyond the construction steps themselves.

TODO: The finished logo’s overall bounding box is not yet confirmed. Measure it directly from the BN Logo.ai master rather than assuming a value.

Prohibitions.

ID Prohibition
LG-01 Do not alter the bracket proportions or relationship (right bracket 0.80p, mirrored, right-snapped)
LG-02 Do not add a stroke — the mark is fill-only
LG-03 Do not ungroup and use a single bracket as the logo

7.3 Lockup

Definition. The combined signature: the Logo paired with a wordmark in a fixed relationship. The Primary lockup uses the plain outlined wordmark; ™ / ® lockups use the corresponding trademark wordmark.

Construction (aspect-locked throughout)

  1. Scale wordmark and logo so the logo’s smaller right bracket (0.80p) matches the wordmark’s c, measured on “broadnarrow” excluding any symbol — that is, 0.80p = c.
  2. Using Align to Key Object with the logo as key object, vertically centre the wordmark to the logo.
  3. Set Horizontal Distribute Space between logo and wordmark to d = 0.25c.

Layout. Logo leading (left), wordmark trailing (right).

Derived scale relation. Step 1 fixes the logo’s size relative to the wordmark:

p = 1.25c — within any lockup the logo’s overall height is 1.25 × c, and the spacing d = 0.25c (= 0.20p).

This single relation keeps every lockup variant proportionally identical.

Variants. All share the same geometry (0.80p = c, d = 0.25c); only the wordmark component differs.

Variant Wordmark used s
Primary Plain outlined
™ Size Standard ™ Standard 0.10c
™ Size Responsive ™ Responsive 0.20c
® Size Standard ® Standard 0.14c
® Size Responsive ® Responsive 0.30c

Prohibitions.

ID Prohibition
LK-01 Do not change the relative sizing (0.80p = c) or the spacing (d = 0.25c)
LK-02 Do not rearrange, re-space, re-align, or re-order the logo and wordmark
LK-03 Do not swap in a mismatched wordmark variant (e.g. an ® wordmark in a ™ lockup)

8. Governance

8.1 Ownership

Role Responsibility
Brand / Creative Lead Accountable for the identity; approves any change
Records Owner (Operations) Maintains this document, the master folder, and the review cadence

Review cadence. Quarterly, and on any material change (new asset, new rule, corrected value).

8.2 Change control

ID Step
GOV-01 Propose the change to the Brand Lead — what, why, impact
GOV-02 On approval, update the artifact: for a master, save a new dated .ai; for the document, edit the relevant section
GOV-03 Record it in the change log and bump the version
GOV-04 Move any superseded master to the section archive — never delete without sign-off

Versioning. MAJOR.MINOR. MAJOR = a change that alters how the identity reproduces, or a restructure of this document. MINOR = clarifications, added rules, corrected copy.

8.3 Adding an asset

ID Step
GOV-05 Add the master to 010 Masters using the naming convention (FND-16)
GOV-06 Add a row to the master inventory
GOV-07 Add a specification under §7 following the fixed structure — Definition → Construction → Variants → Prohibitions
GOV-08 Add any numeric values to the constants block
GOV-09 Add its exports (if any) to BN-BRAND-EXPORTS
GOV-10 Log and version

8.4 Evidence standard

ID Rule
GOV-11 Never invent a value. When capturing a brand fact that has not been supplied, record it as a literal TODO: or route it to the decision log — never a plausible guess. Standards set in this document are deliberate decisions, not guesses at unknown facts.

9. Decision log

All items are ratified. Retained as an audit trail: R1 by the founder; R2–R8 by the brand advisor under delegated authority, 26 July 2026. Re-open any item via §8.2 change control.

# Item Ratified decision
R1 ® registration status Application filed in India, registration pending. Use now; run the ™→® transition on grant. ® will be valid in India only.
R2 Standard → Responsive threshold Use Responsive when rendered s falls below ~6 px / ~1.75 mm — i.e. c ≤ 48 px / 15 mm.
R3 Minimum sizes Wordmark 24 px / 8 mm · Logo 16 px / 5 mm · Lockup 32 px / 10 mm.
R4 (withdrawn) Withdrawn at v1.8. Clear-space values. Spacing is a property of application, not of master artwork; governed by BN-BRAND-EXPORTS. Number retired, not reused.
R5 Symbol offset datum Gap g = 0.10c measured from datum D to the symbol’s left edge. Both endpoints confirmed by founder.
R6 Lockup element order Logo left, wordmark right; scaled 0.80p = c, spacing d = 0.25c.
R7 Rich-black recipe Marks / type / detail at 100% K; large solids at rich black C60 M40 Y40 K100.
R8 Trademark placement policy First and/or most prominent use plus all external / marketing materials; optional in body copy and internal docs; one symbol per instance; variant per current status ().

10. Change log

Version Date Author Change
1.0 26 Jul 2026 Brand / Operations Reorganised into Foundations + asset families; set industry-standard values, prohibitions, usage hierarchy, governance, decision log. Masters-only scope.
1.1 26 Jul 2026 Brand / Operations Recorded trademark status (filed in India, pending); added ™→® transition mechanism; resolved R1.
1.2 26 Jul 2026 Brand advisor (delegated) Ratified R2–R8. Decision log closed.
1.3 26 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Clarified the symbol datum: top-right corner of “narrow”, not the wordmark bounding-box top.
1.4 26 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Confirmed the offset TO-datum (symbol’s left edge); R5 closed.
1.5 26 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Introduced formal notation; restated every value in notation; added derived logo geometry and the lockup relation p = 1.25c.
1.6 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Simplified to a single master unit. Confirmed the wordmark’s cap height and its outlined bounding-box height are the same measurement; retired the separate x and n symbols.
1.7 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Clear space documented as a placement rule; masters confirmed tight-cropped.
1.8 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Removed clear space entirely — out of scope for master artwork; moved to BN-BRAND-EXPORTS. Withdrew R4, renumbered §3.6–3.8 → §3.5–3.7, added the tight-crop rule.
2.0 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Restructured for AI-assisted retrieval. Added YAML front matter, §0 Summary, §1 Quick answers, §2 machine-readable constants block, and stable rule IDs (FND-, MU-, USE-, WM-, LG-, LK-, GOV-). Sections made self-contained; terminology normalised. No specification values changed.
2.1 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Front-matter hardening: added machine-readable type, purpose, applies_to (who is bound, not just what is covered), an explicit precedence rule for cross-document conflicts, and rule_id_prefixes to reserve this document’s ID namespace. Declared conforms_to: BN-DOC-STANDARD. No specification values changed.
2.2 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Reclassified from Confidential — Internal to Public, resolving the contradiction with applies_to (which binds agencies and print vendors, who must therefore be able to read it). Published to the web so external designers and vendors can be sent a link rather than a file. No specification values changed.
2.3 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Published at the custom domain brand.broadnarrow.co; published_at and footer updated. No specification values changed.
2.4 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Added the describes_masters drift field (currently 2026-07-23) and referenced the BN-BRAND-CHANGE SOP in FND-17, so the artwork and this document cannot drift apart silently. No specification values changed.
2.5 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Correction — removed fabricated logo geometry. §7.2 and the constants block previously stated stem thickness, arm thickness, arm projection, inter-bracket gap, and an overall p × p bounding box for the logo. None of these were ever specified — they were invented during the notation restructure and should have been left as TODO:. Replaced with only the two dimensions the construction steps actually fix (bracket heights p / 0.80p), and flagged the bounding box as unconfirmed pending direct measurement of BN Logo.ai. Also corrected BN-BRAND-EXPORTS, which had cited the fabricated figure as “independently confirmed” by a real pixel measurement — the measurement was real, the confirmation claim was not.
2.6 27 Jul 2026 Founder / Brand Access changed: gated, not public. Migrated hosting from GitHub Pages to Cloudflare Pages with a Cloudflare Access gate in front of it. A visitor must sign in with an approved email address; the site is no longer open to arbitrary internet visitors. Reason: applies_to includes non-employees who are bound by these rules and must be able to read them, but that does not require the page to be open to the public. Classification changed from Public to Shareable — access-gated.
